I chose to study Primary Education because I have always enjoyed working with children and wanted to make a positive impact on their learning and development. I believe that primary school is a crucial stage where students develop foundational skills, and I want to be part of their journey by creating engaging and supportive learning experiences.
Learning Education (Primary) at ECU has given me a deeper understanding of the complexities of teaching beyond just delivering content. I have learned about different teaching philosophies, classroom management strategies, and the importance of inclusive education. My professional placements have been particularly valuable in seeing theory put into practice, as I have observed and implemented strategies that cater to different learning styles and needs.
The content you learn in Education (Primary) is a blend between the actual content you need to learn to teach primary school students and content regarding how to best approach teaching children like Children’s Growth, Development and Learning – EDL1260. You mostly will get assignments in an Education degree which, for me at least, are mostly written analysis and responses/essays, as well as portfolios. Examples would include making unit outlines or lesson plans, or creating different teaching resources for certain subjects.
There is no length of time required to work as a teacher before being qualified. To teach, all you need is a recognised tertiary teaching degree, which could be a Bachelor of Education or other relevant undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications. You also must be registered with the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia (TRBWA).
I would recommend Education (Primary) to people who are patient, empathetic, and are able to connect with children in a way that makes them feel valued and supported in their learning. Additionally, if you have a creative mind and like the idea of creating interactive lessons to make learning enjoyable for kids, then this degree is right for you.
