I have chosen to study Accounting as I wanted to choose a relevant course that would provide a better opportunity for me to find jobs as a law graduate. Since I want to become a corporate lawyer, I have chosen to study Accounting as fundamental concepts covered in Business Law are taught under the Juris Doctor course. Thus, choosing Accounting would allow me to broaden my job opportunities after completing my law degree. As a 3rd year accounting student who has nearly completed all core units to complete the course and CA acceleration, I wanted to make points regarding what to expect and how to prepare for this course.

Accounting provides an understanding and application of how Australian Accounting Standards apply in the real business world and how real corporations apply accounting skills for their benefit. Accounting is not just about making entries and calculating profits; it shows the accumulation of nearly all business activities, in which the public and investors can predict and understand what the business is trying to achieve and what it has the potential to accomplish. I believe studying Accounting is a good course to study if you are uncertain about what you want to do in commerce, as the content in Finance is significantly harder. Suppose you want to study Accounting in more depth during your undergrad; in that case, it is a good idea to double major in Finance, as Accounting and Finance are inter-correlated.

Even though I did study Accounting and Finance ATAR, Financial Accounting – ACCT1101 teaches the necessary materials and assessments to study and apply basic accounting knowledge. So, if you didn’t study accounting in Year 12, I would not be worried. This is also because Accounting and Finance ATAR and Financial Accounting – ACCT1101 only provide the fundamental knowledge required to understand units in the 2nd and 3rd years.

It is also relatively more straightforward to achieve a Certified Accountant with an Accounting Degree, which UWA provides. Considering Australia lacks professional accountants, many corporations need accountants, which made this major more appealing over other ones offered by UWA Business School. Ultimately, because of the beneficial prospects and relatively straightforward level of study (assuming you develop sound study habits), Accounting is more than a good course to study.
